Mental Health in RCSI

In September of 2019 the United Nations General Assembly recognized mental health as a health priority, adding it to the list of Sustainable Development Goals. In this blog post I’d like to discuss the efforts RCSI is putting out in order to assist students in maintaining a healthy mental life, I would also like to add in a few suggestions.

RCSI Digital Animation Series

RCSI has advocated for it’s students mental health and well being in many ways, such as in May of 2019 where it released a digital animation series which highlighted issues regarding the mental health of young people in Ireland, the animation series was composed of five parts and were funded by the Health Research Board. It contained real responses from young people in Ireland and real emotions, it served as an amazing way to spread information about mental health, especially among young people.

Suggestions

While RCSI has shown efforts in supporting the mental health and well being of its students, I do believe there is some room for improvement.

The RCSI campus is filled with bulletin boards, posting weekly fliers with words of encouragement to the students would go a long way I believe, including topics such as reinforcing positive behavior, and promoting social competency.

Every RCSI student is also equipped with their own email, a weekly or biweekly email from the college itself that promotes social and emotional competency would help a lot I believe.
