It is very important to understand that when it comes to progress the graph isn’t always linear. There are always set backs, obstacles and plateau.
When it comes to providing healthcare, humanity has made great advances within the past century. For example; the life expectancy of a male in the United Kingdom went from 48 years in 1901 to 71.4 years in 1980. This is due to the great advancements that have been made in the field of science. Moreover, the ease of communication in our modern day and age has made it easier to fight infections and diseases on a global scale. Great improvements to medical imaging have made it easier to detect and treat disease at a much earlier stage .
All that being said, there is still room for improvement and that is why UNESCO set the third global sustainability goal of good health and well-being. UNESCO believes that in terms of mental health and diseases such as malaria and tuberculosis, there is a lot that can still be done.
Our group is made up of Mhmod Kadom, Mohammad Al Enzi, Abdulwahab Alabdulhadi and Oghenekevwe Odeghe and we are looking forward to seeing what RCSI is doing for the third SDG.
The “Times Higher SDG university measures” document that was provided clearly set out the criteria that we will be using to assess how well RCSI is doing regarding of the goal at hand.
The current plan, although very daunting, is to focus on mental health, cancer, cardiovascular disease and malaria (in that order). Other than scheduling issues, getting through all of these aspects might be the biggest obstacle we face, but by setting this ambitious goal we want to challenge ourselves. In addition to this, we plan to work with staff from the SARA office to get the number of graduating in health professionals. We also plan to meet with professors and department heads when dealing with topics that are relevant to them. Furthermore, we wish to implement the seventeenth SDG to our plan by working with governmental and independent bodies to collect information and data that we can use to help RCSI’S endeavours in regards to the third SDG.
Finally, we just wanted to state how fortunate we are to get good health and well being as our focus since RCSI is a healthcare oriented university. We understand how great of an opportunity this is and we can not wait to “lead the world to better health”.
